My family, including my employees, are all deeply saddened by the passing of Aubrey Gibson yesterday, 9 November. He spent a lifetime in the oilfield, was a good man, a good father and a terrific husband to his wife, Rose, who in just a few days were due to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary together.
In the late 1970's and throughout the 1980's, Aubrey oversaw seven drilling rigs for Nixon Drilling Company out of Luling. I tried to count the wells that Aubrey and I drilled together over the years, 900 feet deep to over 7,000 feet; I quit after 140. We spent many a sleepless night together, Aubrey and I did, all over South Texas. He taught me a lot. Of the 6,000 some odd Austin Chalk wells drilled in Caldwell County, Aubrey and Jerry Nixon must have drilled half of them. Thousands of people will miss Aubrey, dearly. The Texas oilfield has lost another of its cherished sons.
I can think of no better compliment to a man that to say he was kind and gracious to others, he always, always told the truth, and he was there when you needed him. It is my great honor to have been able to call Aubrey my friend the past 43 years. I will miss him.
