The Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association was formed in 1917 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, following the United States’ entry into World War I. The principal purpose of the Association’s
creation was to represent those independent oil and gas producers that provided essential supplies of petroleum and petroleum product to the allied forces, helping the Allies, “...to float to victory upon a wave of oil.” It consisted of separate entities, or divisions, in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
In 1997 these divisions changed their names. For instance the Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association became the Texas Oil and Gas Association; the Louisiana division was the only one to keep the term, "Mid Continent" in its new name.
This sign I know is at least 66 years old. This one and many others just like it were displayed on oil and gas lease entrances and tank batteries throughout Texas for many decades. Proudly. One hundred dollars for a reward does not sound like much now but back in the 1950's and 1960's, when the price of oil was stable and $2.90 to $3.10 per barrel, $100 dollars was a lot of money.
Actually, it still is. It currently represents about 1.5 BO. In our family we make expenditures not based on money, but barrels of oil. As in, "oh Gawd, how many barrels of oil did THAT cost?
