It's not an issue of obligations or morality to supply the world with energy. Western nations have been fine with invading countries and pillaging their resources since WW1 (which of course was fought over oil... specifically because Britain realized the advantages of oil over coal in their navy ... and they had no oil). So morality and sharing are not factors in this dog fight.

Recall that a couple of years ago the US was rerouting LNG shipments to Europe because prices had blown through the roof and causing massive inflation. If the US refused to send this energy to Europe what happens to Europe?

Obviously prices continue to spike and you end up with hyperinflation and the economy of Europe collapses.

I dabble in a bit of finance... so I know what happens if Europe collapses... their financial system implodes. This is not a temporary problem - it is permanent ... because collapse does not fix their energy deficit ... as we know from Lehman ... a relatively small beast... if you let a bank go it can bring down the global financial system. If Europe collapses massive banks go down ... governments collapse... all those bonds and other debt held by US banks, pensions funds etc... are gone.

Now the US banking system collapses.

Aside from the financial implications - what do you think happens to industry in Europe? If they do not have a supply of affordable energy they collapse - it's already happening. Throw in the collapse of the financial system and all industry collapses.

Do you import any parts from German factories for extracting, refining and delivering oil to markets? Where do you obtain these parts if Germany has collapsed?

Surely you recognize the interconnectivity of the global economy... that if one key part of the global economy breaks - the entire global economy breaks.

Something sets off an interrelated Eurozone crisis and banking crisis, a Spanish default say, which spreads panic and fear across other vulnerable Eurozone countries. This sets off a Minsky moment when overleveraged speculators in the banking and shadow banking system are forced to unwind positions into a one-sided (sellers only) market.

The financial system contagion passes a tipping point where governments and central banks start to lose control and panic drives a (positive feedback) deepening and widening of the impact globally. In our tropic model of the globalised economy, the banking and monetary system keystonehub comes out of its equilibrium range, crosses a tipping point, and is driven away by positive feedbacks to some new state.

I am French and I live in the Nord Pas de Calais, the most industrial region of the country. and I work in the starch industry. I can tell you that industrial activities are not great throughout the country. when I talk about the siphoning of European industry it is a long-term project which has already started for many years and many regional and European companies have already suffered (arques crystalworks, alstom, doliprane arms industry etc.). .) towards the end of the Roman Empire the eastern part did not hesitate to abandon the western side. (Attila, the barbarian invasions) I think it will be the same thing, we defend our interests and Europe will not do so, if it had avoided using its forces during WW1 which will cause WW2. Don't forget that the USA is a superpower that makes you dream. These are thoughts that I ask myself without being right. for uranium I knew that the USA was not a major producer but from there to canibalizing its nuclear weapons no.

Mike, thanks for the post but as analyst, you shoud really count the postion of liquids that produces middle distellates (kerosene, diesel, jet fuel).

The words runs and eats thanks to distillates, so the us will have to go to war for other people's oil in the medium term regardless (and so the other OECD countries). Even shale done correctly would have prevented this, only shifted by a couple of years, maybe? There isn't much sleep to be lost here, conflict is coming either way....

I am aware of the role that LTO plays in the refinery scheme. It makes good gasoline and because we are decade or more from affordable renewables as a transportation fuel in the US. and most of America is rural, every year matters. I don't think I would eat all the food in my cashe at one time just because I knew I was going to starve to death anyway.
